Drive along the fjord and cross many inter-island bridges to reach pretty Tingvoll Farm. The farm has a long history of craftsmanship dating back to 1303. Today, three generations live together on the farm.
The farm is famous for its cheese-making, which takes place in a separate dairy built in 2006 and expanded in 2019.
Fresh milk comes straight into the two 700-liter cheese vats from the adjacent barn. It takes 10 liters (2.6 gallons) of milk to make a kilogram (2.2 lbs) of cheese. The farm processes 140 liters of milk into cheese five days a week. The annual production is about 32,000 kg of cheese (70,000 lbs). In addition, the farm delivers about 260,000 liters of milk to a dairy facility in the neighboring municipality.
From the farm shop, peer into the cheese room and ripening room to get a feel for the process. Tingvoll's cheeses have won several awards, both nationally and internationally. All four of Tingvoll's cheeses have won medals at the World Cheese Awards, but in 2016, its blue cheese won the World's Best Cheese Award in San Sebastian, Spain and took out the Champion of Champions award for the world's best cheese throughout the competition's 29-year history.
Enjoy a tasting of four types of cheese, accompanied by crackers and savory marmalade.
