This fascinating half-day tour takes you across Vestvågøy Island, through rich and fertile farmland. Other than fishing, farming is the most important revenue earner in this area.
Continue to Borg and visit the Viking Museum. Archaeologists have discovered a chieftain's farmstead here, with objects linking the Lofoten Islands to the Mediterranean, France, England and Germany. The main house at Borg is the largest Viking building ever discovered (272 feet long). An exact replica has been built next to the excavations, and offers a glimpse of the year AD 900. In the living quarters, leatherwork, felting and wool are demonstrated, just as these textiles were handled in the Viking era.
The well-known fishing village of Henningsvær is situated on a group of tiny islets off the coast of Austvågøy. Henningsvær is famous for its special quality of light -- a favorite with artists and photographers. It is also one of the most important places along the coast for the cod-fishing industry. In March, when the cod season begins, it is the base for a very large fishing fleet.
You will have some free time for strolling through the village. Visit the art gallery, exhibiting the paintings of national and international artists. The gallery's first floor is divided into two sections -- one showing watercolors by Lars Lerin and the other exhibiting pictures and ceramic works by Her Majesty Queen Sonja.
Notes:
Dress warmly in layers with a wind- and waterproof outer layer; bring gloves, a scarf and a warm hat. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
