Departing the pier on foot, it's just a short walk to the Orkney Distillery, where award-winning Kirkjuvagr Gin is produced. Enjoy an exclusive tour and learn what makes this aromatic small-batch gin so exceptional. Meet Stephen Kemp, master distiller, founder, and the man who works the magic to earn this gin so many accolades. He'll tell you all about the local botanicals used to produce this fine spirit. Sample three types of Kirkjuvagr and linger over a gin and tonic afterward.
Take a leisurely stroll through the historical Old Town of Kirkwall, the Viking capital of Orkney. Visit the magnificent 12th-century red sandstone St Magnus Cathedral. It is thought to be the finest medieval building in northern Scotland -- what do you think?
Examine the well-preserved ruins of Bishop's Palace with a good view over the town from the tower. The nearby Earl's Palace is one of Scotland's most elegant Renaissance buildings. Both lie in the heart of modern Kirkwall. Your guide's colorful tales of the tyrannical Stewart earls bring the buildings to life.
End your tour at Tankerness House, surrounded by lovely gardens. You have free time here to explore the museum (at your own expense) or return to the ship with your guide.
Notes
Tour is conducted entirely on foot. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Terrain includes mostly flat paved services, steps and cobblestones.
