Drive from the pier to the ferry landing and cross the lagoon to the Curonian Peninsula, also known as Neringa. Legend says that the giant Neringa gathered an apron full of sand and poured a ribbon of sand to divide the sea from the lagoon, making the fishermen safer.
You will drive along this picturesque narrow stretch of land, which is 60 miles long. See the diverse nature of the Curonian Spit -- a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stop in the oldest fishing village, called Blackshore and see its beautiful villas. Visit the Weathervane Gallery, see the Lutheran church and taste the local amber drink, which is a well-known cure-all remedy.
Arriving at the main settlement of Nida, you'll walk through the town center. Keep an eye out for the fishermen's cottages, beautiful weathervanes, and flat-bottom boats. There's a chance to buy some souvenirs or purchase refreshments from a local restaurant (at your own expense).
At the nearby Kazimieras Mizgiris Amber Gallery you will find out all there is to know about amber -- its origins, places where it can be found, what raw amber looks like and the finished product, which is beautiful jewelry. Don't miss the Amber Treasure of Juodkrante exhibit.
Continue by coach to the 170-foot-tall Great Dune, and see the magnificent panorama over the dunes and the town. Then, drive towards the sea to view the long sandy beaches and head back to Klaipeda.
Notes:
Walking distance is at the discretion of each participant. Seating is available in the weathervane gallery, the church and alongside the lagoon for guests to sit down. The highest dune has a steep asphalt path.
