At Christmas time, Kiel takes on a very special charm, transforming into a magical winter wonderland shaped by crisp days, twinkling lights and, for the fortunate, snow.
Meet your local guide and walk to the Old Town of Kiel, passing St Nicholas Church and through the Holstenstraße pedestrian zone. Learn about the city's history along the way.
Pause at the traditional Christmas Market in Holstenplatz. Festively decorated stalls offer everything from delicious treats to handcrafted gifts, all beneath sparkling lights, illuminated Christmas trees, and festive star decorations. Learn about German Christmas traditions and explore the first few stalls together with your guide. Then, set out on your own to shop at the Christmas Market.
See the historic Asmus-Bremer Platz on your way to Town Hall Square. A smaller market at Asmus-Bremer Platz offers a very relaxed atmosphere. Take photos of the impressive 41-foot-tall (12.5 m) Christmas Pyramid. The third market, located in Town Hall Square, adopts the theme of "Romantic, Nordic, Unspoiled." What do you think? A colorful Christmas village evokes a touch of nostalgia. Don't miss the highlight — a traditional 1900s horse-drawn carousel — alongside other whimsical attractions that add a touch of fairytale wonder.
Enjoy a mug of mulled wine to warm up. Time permitting, guests wishing to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so, but must make their own way back to the ship.
Notes:
Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Tour is conducted entirely on foot and requires around 2.5 hours of walking.
