Explore WWI & WWII Maritime history with The HISTORY Channel.
The Baltic Sea reaches into the heart of Kiel, creating a truly traditional maritime city. A panoramic drive takes you past the city's highlights, including a fascinating view of the impressive Kiel Canal, which connects the North Sea with the Baltic Sea. The 61-mile-long canal is the world’s busiest artificial waterway.
Continue along the eastern shore of the Kiel Fjord to the lovely town of Laboe. The impressive Laboe Navy Memorial. Originally built to memorialize those who died while serving in Germany’s navy during World War I, and later World War II, it was rededicated in 1954 as a memorial to sailors of all nationalities lost at sea and a tribute to peaceful sailing on the open seas. From the memorial's observation deck, take in the wonderful view over the Baltic Sea, the coastline and the submarine below. Afterward, you are free to visit the World War II submarine.
End your tour with some free time to stroll along the Baltic coastline in Laboe. You may wish to seek out a delicious fish roll -- a typical Kiel snack (at your own expense).
