In the 1960s and 1970s, several small settlements in Greenland were abandoned as people chose to move to the larger towns to find work. Assaqutaq, beautifully situated at the foot of Mt Nasaasaaq's south side, is one such settlement.
Today, Assaqutaq is used as a summer camp for the local primary schools and, particularly in June, the place comes alive, as people from Sisimiut go there to fish for ammassat (capelin -- Mallotus villosus).
Set out with a small group (maximum 12 privileged guests) for a more personalized experience. Board a boat to cross the tand outside or shelter in the cabin during the cruise to and from Assaqutaq.
On land, take a short walk through the abandoned settlement to see the old fish factory, the traditional cemetery frozen in time, the house currently used as a summer camp, and the old church.
Notes:
Participants must be agile. Terrain includes steps to board the boat, uneven surfaces, gravel, grass, rocks, inclines, and a marine ramp from the boat to the pier, which can be very steep at low tide. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer should be windproof and waterproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat, and a scarf.
