The beautiful icebergs of Ilulissat surround the abandoned settlement of Sermermiut, located just south of the city. Transfer by bus to the site that Inuit cultures have occupied over the past 4,500 years. Today, you can still find artifacts here that bear witness to their presence.
As you explore on foot with your guide, hear stories about the life and customs of the native Greenlanders before the arrival of the Vikings. See ruins and a kitchen midden, and feel the permafrost with your own hands.
A short trek will take you as far as the viewpoint at Kællingekløft.
Notes:
A local guide will meet your group at the starting point of the hike. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer should be windproof and waterproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat, and a scarf. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Visitors can take this hike on their own; however, hiking in the Greenlandic mountains can be a challenge for newcomers, and landmarks are often difficult to spot. Your guide will ensure you stay on track and enjoy sharing the experience with others.
