This astounding boat ride on the iceberg-studded waters of Ilulissat is a must-do. It is your gateway to a magical world of silent sentinels -- behemoths that guard the fjord and provide a sheltered, if crowded, passage through the cold waters.
More than 40 million tons of ice flow out into the fjord called Disko Bay every single day of the year. The gigantic icebergs can be more than 300 feet tall, towering above the water's surface. They get stranded at the end of the fjord, making for an excellent chance to weave among them by boat.
The icebergs are beautiful in every kind of weather. In the sunshine, the contrasts are very clear, dominated by outrageous shades of blue. When it is cloudy, the moody, heavy aspect is a brooding reminder of nature's raw power. At night, the midnight sun casts a special glow, frosting the icebergs with an eerie, tingling light.
Notes:
Wear sturdy, non-skid walking shoes. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer should be windproof and waterproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat, and a scarf. There is no guide on the boat -- it is a cruise only. Each boat has a skipper and a mate who may speak a little English. Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here; you are trading breadth of experience for authentic interaction. Bring your spirit of adventure, and please bear with any language difficulties or with any operational surprises.
