Transfer to the GeoSea Baths, a natural wonder where geothermally heated water fills a pool with natural, mineral-rich saltwater.
Drilling at Húsavíkurhöfði in the mid-20th century discovered water too briny for heating houses. Instead of letting this hot water go to waste, it was turned into a public bath. Húsavík residents now enjoy the health benefits of bathing in hot seawater, which is at an optimal temperature of 100 - 102°F (38°-39°C).
Chlorination is not required, as the steady flow of water from the drill holes between the pools overflows the baths into the sea, ensuring that the water changes constantly and adheres to health regulations.
As you bathe, take in the view of the mountain range to the west, Skjálfandi Bay beneath the cliffs, and the Arctic Circle on the horizon.
Notes:
Local custom and pool regulations mandate that all guests shower (without swim attire) and wash thoroughly with soap and water before entering the baths. A limited number of curtained shower cubicles are available. There are separate changing facilities and showers for men and women. Lockers are free of charge, and all items and clothing can be stored in the lockers. Do not wear jewelry in the water, as the minerals can stain metals. Shoes cannot be worn inside the locker facility; they are either stored outside the locker area on designated shelves or put in plastic bags to store inside the lockers. Swimwear must be worn in the thermal baths. Light-colored swimwear can be discolored by the minerals in the water. Bring your swimsuit and a towel from the ship (or these items can also be rented at the facility at your own expense). Bring sandals or flip-flops. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, inclines, gravel, and steps. Wear sturdy, non-skid walking shoes. Minimum age is 3 years.
