A place of extraordinary forces, Jökulsá River Canyon National Park is glacial, wildly romantic, and full of contrasts.
Take in the horseshoe-shaped Asbyrgi (Fortress of the Gods) Canyon. Geologists claim it was formed by a catastrophic flood, but Icelandic mythology says it is a hoof mark from Oðin's eight-footed horse.
Then, drive on to Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall at 132 feet tall and 300 feet wide. Up to 1500 tons of water, mud and sand rumble into Jokulsargljufur, the greatest and the most spectacular canyon in all of Iceland.
Continue to the gurgling purple and yellow sulfur cauldrons at the high-temperature thermal field of Namaskard, which are so hot that they actually boil.
After lunch, journey toward Godafoss Waterfall -- one of the most spectacular in Iceland.
Finally, you will head back to Húsavík
Notes:
Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Wear sturdy, non-skid walking shoes. Dietary requests for lunch venues must be received at least 48 hours before the ship arrives in Akureyri. Parents traveling with children under the age of 3 must rent a child's car seat from the tour operator; please see the Shore Excursions team on board. You cannot use your child's car seat from home in Iceland. Use of restroom facilities costs ISK300 (approximately $2.00); card payments only (no cash).
