Enjoy magnificent wildlife and stunning scenery aboard a traditionally renovated fishing boat made of oak. There is perhaps no better place in the world to see minke whales than right here in Skjalfandi Bay. These small whales have a reputation elsewhere for being somewhat shy and elusive, but in this bay, they are quite extroverted and often approach boats and surface right alongside. They are interested in humans and appear to enjoy the novelty of watching you watching them.
An added bonus: boisterous white-beaked dolphins and harbor porpoises frequently show up as well, and keep an eye out for curious humpback whales.
Notes:
Views are weather permitting. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. Participants must walk 400 - 800 yards each way to board the whale-watching boat. Wear sturdy non-skid, waterproof walking shoes. Stepping onto the boat can be slippery; the boat's deck can be slippery. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Bring a warm down (or similar) jacket; wear long thermal underwear and several layers of wool and/or polypro (no cotton) as it is very cool out on the water. Jeans are not allowed.
