Board Iceland's only schooner to delve into this magnificent country's past and present.
Help set the sails or assist the skipper as a lee helmsman as the schooner Haukur takes you to Lundey Island. This is "the puffin island" and is also a traditional whale-watching area. An almost unfathomable population of 200,000 puffins breed here, which makes for a truly vast number of puffin chicks in the summertime. You'll stop near the island to watch the puffins and other seabirds.
Húsavík is perhaps the best place in the world to see the tiny minke whale. These are normally quite timid creatures, but here, they have been known to approach the boats and surface right alongside. Whales are often encountered within 20 minutes of leaving the harbor and appear to take as much interest in humans as we do in them.
Boisterous white-beaked dolphins and harbor porpoises frequently join the party, and sometimes humpback and other large whales are spotted also.
Notes:
Tour operates weather permitting. The boat is not covered. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion; outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat and a scarf. The deck of the boat is slippery and requires a good sense of balance. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability before booking for your health and safety.
