Vestmannaeyjar is small and boasts only a modest population, but it is rich in history and natural beauty. Set out on this walking tour of the island with an informative local guide — a chance to get more closely acquainted with some of its highlights.
Begin at the naturally-formed harbor that was almost destroyed in the massive volcanic eruption of 1973. Visit Skansinn — a replica of the old fort built by orders of the Danish king in the 17th century. A wooden church and Landlyst, the oldest house on the island, are nearby.
Walk up a small hill that offers a great view of the island, and from there, cross the new lava field from 1973.
The Sagnheimar Folk Museum is a new museum founded on old traditions. In addition to the many artifacts housed here, modern technology lends history and culture a new dimension.
Walk back through the town of Heimaey and return to the pier and your ship.
Notes:
Tour requires considerable walking. Participants must be physically fit. Terrain includes inclines, steps, uneven and unpaved surfaces, dirt and gravel. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations.
