Journey into the Arctic night for a memorable evening at Mikkelgammen, a Samí camp with traditional structures, where culture and nature meld under the Northern Lights (aurora borealis).
Your hosts, Mikkel and Solveig, welcome you with warmth and tradition, sharing the art of storytelling and yoik — the ancient Sami form of meditative singing.
Head to the top of Mount Salen. Though just 275 feet (84 m) tall, its viewpoint offers sweeping vistas of Hammerfest, the fjord, and surrounding islands — the perfect backdrop for great photos. While waiting for the aurora to appear, you'll hear stories of how this phenomenon of spectral beauty has shaped local folklore and everyday life in the Far North, along with insights into the science behind this natural wonder.
Whether or not the aurora lights up the sky, this tour offers a rewarding experience of Sami heritage, Arctic landscapes, and the enduring spirit of northern Norway.
Notes:
Reindeer roam freely in the wilderness; their presence at the Sami camp is not guaranteed. The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, and viewing is not guaranteed. Their appearance depends entirely on solar activity and weather conditions.
