Galway City is a picturesque and lively city with a wonderful avant-garde culture. The city has many relics of its medieval past and is worth taking time to explore. It changes constantly and features a fascinating juxtaposition of new and old architecture.
Walk to the conveniently compact city center in the company of your guide. This vibrant medieval "City of the Tribes" was founded in the 15th century. For many years, 14 merchant families effectively ran the Galway -- they were known as the "Tribes of Galway." Trade was booming, and Galway became the principal Irish port for trade with Spain and France. Your guide will captivate you with stories of past and present as you walk the very streets where trade was and still is at the forefront. Pass Eyre Square, the Town Walls, Lynch's Castle, and the Spanish Arch. Stop to view the exterior of Saint Nicholas Church, founded in 1320. It is the largest medieval parish church in Ireland.
Along the way, you'll pause for an Irish coffee before you return to the pier with your guide. Guests wishing to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so but must make their own way back to the ship.
Notes: This tour is conducted entirely on foot. Tour requires approximately two hours of walking. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, and steps.
