Leaving Galway City behind, you'll embark on a panoramic drive through County Galway. Pass through Oughterard and Maam before arriving in the town of Cong in neighboring County Mayo.
The town of Cong is home to the majestic remains of Cong Abbey, founded in the 12th century by Turlough O'Connor, King of Connaught and High King of Ireland. The Market Cross of Cong commemorates two former abbots of the monastery. However, its most noteworthy landmark is the cottage that featured in the movie Quiet Man, starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. Scenes from the movie were filmed here in the cottage that is now in ruins.
Memorabilia from various scenes are featured in the nearby Cottage Museum, designed as an exact replica of the original. Enjoy the beauty of Cong as it is today and imagine how it was when the film was made more than 50 years ago. You can still see Dannaghers Farmhouse, the Reverend Playfair's home (still inhabited) and, of course, the most famous landmark of all -- Pat Cohan's Bar.
Cong is also home to the magnificent Ashford Castle Hotel. Take advantage of some free time to explore the grounds of this beautiful estate and enjoy scones and tea or coffee in the pretty village before you return to the ship in Galway.
