Your journey begins with a scenic panoramic drive from the charming village of Grundarfjörður along the dramatic coastline to Ólafsvík.
This small fishing town nestles beneath the iconic Snæfellsjökull Glacier.
Board a boat and set out on an unforgettable whale watching cruise on Breiðafjörður Bay. This region is known as one of the best places in Iceland to spot two of the ocean's top predators — sperm whales and orca (killer) whales. You may also see pilot whale, minke whale, humpback whale, and white-beaked dolphin. Sightings depend on the season — spring and early summer are the best times for orcas, while late summer and autumn often bring sightings of humpbacks and dolphins. On rare occasions, even blue whales or fin whales have made an appearance.
Ólafsvík stands out not only for its stunning setting but also for its incredible whale watching environment. This tour is a quiet and respectful experience, free from the crowds of multiple boats and operated by experienced local captains and guides who follow strict codes of responsible wildlife viewing. They work closely with conservation organizations such as Orca Guardians Iceland. You'll gain an insight into whale behavior, biology, and conservation, making it both a memorable and educational encounter with Iceland's marine life.
Your tour concludes with a relaxing return drive along the coast back to the pier in Grundarfjörður.
Notes:
Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Tour operates rain or shine but may be canceled by the operator in the event of extremely bad weather or unsuitable conditions. The boat may not be exclusive to Holland America Line guests.
