Upon leaving Grundarfjordur, your journey takes you through several small fishing villages and along the dramatic coastline as you head toward Snaefells Glacier. The glacier was made famous by French writer Jules Verne in his classic novel Journey to the Center of the Earth. However, it is just one of many interesting geological features, mountains and volcanoes that also grace the area.
Next, visit Djupalonssandur Beach -- once a prominent fishing center but now uninhabited. A short walk to a viewing platform yields spectacular views of the black-pebble beach below and the remains of a fishing trawler wrecked in 1948.
After a short drive past the cliffs of Londrangar, you will arrive in the tiny fishing village of Arnarstapi. The idyllic location boasts many interesting lava formations and an abundance of birdlife.
