History and beauty unite in Edinburgh -- Scotland's proud capital. A dramatic balance exists here between the tall, dark buildings of the medieval Old Town and the classic architecture of the Georgian New Town. From Greenock, travel alongside the River Clyde and join the freeway direct to Edinburgh.
Upon arrival, you'll commence a panoramic orientation drive past the main sights. Navigate the Old Town, entering the historic Royal Mile. This ancient stretch of roadway is lined with delightful multi-storied houses and quaint side streets. It leads from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood House. The latter is the official Scottish residence of the King, dating from the late 15th century. You'll be afforded a rather lovely vista over beautifully-tended gardens.
Visit Edinburgh Castle, home of Scottish kings and queens for centuries, perched on a rocky promontory 445 feet above the city. There is much to see within the castle complex, including the Scottish Crown Jewels and the apartments where Mary, Queen of Scots, gave birth to the future James I of England. Steeped in legend and lore, this castle has witnessed many tense moments during its thousand-year reign over the city.
You will then have free time to explore the Old Town of Edinburgh on your own and purchase lunch (at your own expense).
In the New Town, wander past the Princes Street shops, or snap photos of the castle silhouetted against the skyline. Return to the coach and rejoin the freeway for the drive back to Greenock.
Notes:
Lunch is not included. You will have time to purchase lunch at your own expense during the tour.
