Visit Herdalsetra, the largest mountain farm still in use in Norway. It is situated on a plateau 1,650 feet above sea level and has been running continuously for more than 300 years.
Departing Geiranger, your coach will climb the exciting Eagle Road with its 11 hairpin bends. Stopping at the Eagle's Bend, take in the spectacular view (weather permitting) of the Seven Sisters Waterfall and your cruise ship anchored below.
Reaching the mountain summit, you will drive through high snow-covered mountains and lovely green valleys before reaching Ytterdal.
On Storfjord (the huge fjord of which Geirangerfjord is a part), you will find Norway's northernmost orchard, where real summer fruits such as apricots grow. Climb from here to one of the many summer mountain farms in the area. Summer farms usually operate from early June until the end of August. With its 30 farm buildings, Dale Farm is located 1,500 feet above sea level and had no road connecting it to civilization until 1960. A guided tour introduces you to the people who work the farm, and you'll have a chance to befriend the goats. The farm's main product is brown-and-white goat milk cheese. The traditions of summer farming in these mountains and the production process are very interesting.
Enjoy samples of the various products, such as the goat cheese and caramels produced on the farm.
Return to Geiranger along the same route, once more enjoying the spectacular scenery.
Notes:
Views are weather permitting. Participants must be able to walk approximately a half-mile. Terrain includes even and grassy surfaces with 2 - 5 steps. Wear comfortable, non-skid shoes. If the Summer Farm is closed due to heavy snowfall or any other operational reason, a visit to a similar farm in the valley will be substituted.
