Discover the scenic highlights of the Aurlandsfjord region.
Leave Eidfjord, a small village at the head of the fjord built on sand and gravel moraines deposited in the last Ice Age. At Brimnes, you'll cross to the northern side of the fjord via the Hardanger Bridge. A short drive brings you to the orchard village of Ulvik, known for its agricultural school.
The road zigzags through mountainside orchards, offering a lovely view of the fjord and mountains. You'll pass Lakes Espeland and Granvin. Hairpin bends lead up to Skjervet Pass and its eponymous waterfall, with the descent on the far side to the village of Voss. Stop to view the Tvinde Waterfall cascading down the mountainside and watch for Oppheim Lake and the Stalheim Hotel perched on a cliff overlooking the Nærøy Valley.
You will take the steepest road in Norway past the Sivle and Stalheim Falls before reaching the valley floor and the idyllic village of Flåm at the head of the Aurlandsfjord.
Enjoy the visual treat of one of Norway's most spectacular train rides -- the Flåm Railway. The line is only 12 miles long, but the journey takes 50 minutes as you climb to Myrdal Station at an elevation of 2,844 feet. Hop off the train for photos at Kjosfoss if you wish.
Change trains and continue on the main line down the Raundalen Valley to Voss. Meet your coach here and head back to the ship in Eidfjord.
Brunch is served in either Voss or Stalheim.
Notes:
This tour is non-refundable and non-transferable from 21 days prior to the ship's call at Eidfjord. The railway stations are open-air and have no restroom facilities. The Flåm train is not exclusive to Holland America Line guests. Tour sequence may vary.
