Depart from the pier in Dunmore East and travel to Waterford City. A panoramic drive along the main thoroughfare showcases Reginald's Tower and the River Suir.
The lush, green Irish countryside opens out before you in picturesque neighboring County Tipperary -- Ireland's largest inland county -- with mountains, plains and river valleys.
Well before you reach the town of Cashel, the rock that bears its name appears on the skyline, rearing up from the landscape in a series of limestone ridges and topped by the ruins of the serenely beautiful Cathedral of St Patrick. You will visit the Rock of Cashel -- an impressive pre-Christian settlement. Cashel was the royal seat of the Kings of Munster from the 4th century AD. St Patrick arrived in AD 432 and converted King Aengus to Christianity.
Enjoy some free time to explore Cashel on your own; then, regroup for lunch at a local restaurant.
Cahir, located on the River Suir, and its eponymous castle date mainly from the 15th century. The castle was formerly the stronghold of the powerful local Anglo-Norman Butler family and the Dukes and Earls of Ormond. The huge walls enclose the outer, middle and inner wards. A gate with a portcullis guards the inner one. Explore the rooms in the keep, which are whitewashed and contain armor displays and period furnishings from the 16th and 17th centuries.
A leisurely drive returns you to Dunmore East.
