Travel today to Lismore -- a jewel on the stately, tree-lined Blackwater River.
Admire the beauty of the town and the ducal castle that salutes Lismore from above. Founded by St Carthage in AD 636, Lismore flourished to become the greatest monastic school of the 8th century and, today, it is a designated Irish Heritage Town. Its ecclesiastical theme recognizes the city's medieval importance, historic buildings and dramatic vistas.
Your tour begins at the Lismore Heritage Centre, dominated by the backdrop of Lismore Castle. An entertaining and award-winning audiovisual introduces you to the history of Lismore and the surrounding local areas. Hear the unusual story of the Book of Lismore and the Lismore Crozier, both of which were discovered hidden in the walls of the castle in 1814.
Lismore Castle is perhaps the most spectacular in Ireland and has been the home of the Duke of Devonshire since 1753. Enjoy a walk through the enchanting Lismore Castle Gardens and wander in the footsteps of poets such as Thackeray and Spencer or even the dancing feet of Fred Astaire. The gardens sprawl across seven acres within the outer defensive walls, retaining much of their original Jacobean form. Don't miss the remarkable Yew Walk, where Edmund Spencer is said to have written The Faerie Queen.
Notes:
Lunch can be purchased during the tour (at your own expense). Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. Wear comfortable walking shoes. There is no inside visit to Lismore Castle as it is closed to the public.
