Iceland's scenery is unlike anyplace else, and the small village of Djúpivogur is surrounded by mountains, glaciers, lava formations, moss-covered cliffs and deep valleys. This outing offers an introduction to this stunning visual feast. It starts at the pier and is ideal for those interested in nature, local culture and history, and learning about the bird life in the area.
Walk with your guide to the Bondavarda cache. This is an age-old pile of rocks, similar to a cairn that people carefully assembled to guide others during the cold, dark winters. Bondavarda offers a fantastic view of the village and surrounding area. Within this vista is Bulandstindur Mountain -- a pyramid of basaltic strata counted as one of the mystical power centers of this intriguing country.
Take in the lovely view; then, your local guide will lead you down to Breidivogur and Fyluvogur -- two small lakes. Here, you'll find a hut used by bird watchers as a blind.
Continue into town, where you will visit an arts and crafts shop. Local artists make interesting items from wood and bones found in the vicinity.
Guests who wish to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so but must make their own way back to the ship.
Notes:
Bird sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. The birds start migrating away around mid-August. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability before booking, as the walk is uphill, over unpaved, rough walking tracks with many steps. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. Wear sturdy walking shoes. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat and a scarf. Tour operates rain or shine but may be canceled by the operator in the event of extremely bad weather or unsuitable conditions. Minimum age is 8 years.
