Denmark is home to the oldest monarchy in the world. The three royal castles of Copenhagen are featured on this tour.
Surely the most cherished landmark of Copenhagen is the famous Little Mermaid statue -- a tiny woman who paid the highest price to become a human being.
Continue by coach to the small and idyllic Rosenborg Castle (1607), built by King Christian IV, whose colorful personality left an indelible mark on Danish history.
Christiansborg Palace, set on a pretty canal, is the only building in the world to be the seat of all three branches of a nation's government -- executive, legislative and judicial. This neo-baroque palace (1907) occupies Slotsholmen Island, from where Monarchs have traditionally ruled Denmark since the earliest days of this country's history. Visit the Royal Reception rooms. Of special interest are the relatively new tapestries gifted to the Queen Mother on her 50th birthday in 1990. They were actually completed in 2000 and now decorate the large banquet hall.
Pause for photos in front of the Danish Royal Opera House -- one of the most expensive opera houses ever built. A splendid view across the harbor includes Amalienborg Palace -- residence of His Majesty King Frederik X.
Transfer to Copenhagen's Kastrup Airport in time for your flight.
Notes:
This tour is available only to guests whose cruise ends in Copenhagen, with flights departing after 4pm. Shoe covers are provided at Christiansborg Palace and must be worn. Tour requires walking approximately .8 miles. Terrain includes about 80 stairs at Christiansborg Palace. Larger bags are not allowed inside at Christiansborg palace. A visit to Amalienborg Palace may replace the visit to the Opera House. In the unlikely event that Chrisitansborg Palace is closed for a royal reception or state visit, a visit to the Palace Square at Amalienborg Castle and the Royal Garden will be substituted. Minimum age is 10 years.
