Leave Cherbourg and drive to Sainte-Mère-Eglise, located in the middle of the traditional Normandy livestock breeding area. This small town brutally entered the news headlines in 1944 when the US 82nd Airborne Division troops landed here and liberated Sainte-Mère-Eglise on June 6th.
A guided visit to the village showcases Milestone Zero, located just in front of the Town Hall and symbolizing the start of the Road to Freedom.
Inside the church, a modern stained-glass window features the American parachute drop.
Relax for a scenic drive to Sainte-Marie-du-Mont and along Utah Beach, with a stop en route at the Crisbecq Battery (outside view only; entrance fee not included).
Afterward, return directly to Cherbourg.
Notes:
Inside church visit(s) may not be possible if religious services are being held.
