Depart by coach from the ship to tour Bordeaux by coach and on foot. This marvelous city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site -- a distinction that recognizes the beauty and unity of Bordeaux's architectural heritage. It is the largest urban entity to be so honored. Its symphony of style has developed harmoniously over many centuries and is remarkably well-preserved. It covers almost seven square miles (half of the city) from the outer boulevards to the banks of the Garonne.
View the Chartrons riverfront where the wine industry began, the Cailhau Gate (15th century), the 14th-century Big Bell, and Place des Quinconces -- one of Europe's largest squares with a column commemorating the French Revolution.
Leave the coach at the 18th-century Palais Rohan, now the City Hall, and walk to the 13th-century Cathedral of St Andrew, where Eleanor of Aquitaine married Louis VII. Step inside for a look around.
View the Grand Theatre, built by Victor Louis in 1773 and one of the most beautiful theatres in Europe. It is an architectural work of art.
Strolling through the Old Bordeaux precinct, you'll see Parliament Square -- the former royal marketplace (1760) with pretty façades and a fountain, and Place de la Bourse -- the former royal square dedicated to Louis XV (1729).
The tour concludes with a short coach drive back to the pier.
