Take a short walk from the pier to the center of Bergen and step into the world of gold- and silversmiths. Arven's Gold & Silver has been based in Bergen city center for 150 years and is the place to buy Norwegian-design jewelry, interior design items, and silverware. Everything is handmade and manufactured on the premises, and you can watch the smiths at work through a 40-yard-long glass wall -- a fascinating view.
Nearby, you will visit St Mary's Church -- the oldest building in Bergen. Check out the four portals -- Roman, recessed, Romanesque, and Gothic in style.
Down at the waterfront, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Bryggen Pier reminds visitors of the powerhouse that Bergen was during the Middle Ages and its exalted status among Hanseatic ports of Europe. Take in the atmosphere of this colorful precinct and pause for coffee and a local snack before returning to the ship on foot or by shuttle.
Guests wishing to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so but must make their own way back to the ship.
