Already a stronghold during the late Roman Empire, Brest grew in stature during the Middle Ages and the Second Empire period. Today, it is known for some beautiful landmarks that evoke these eras.
Take a sightseeing drive through the city by double-decker bus for a terrific view of Brest and its many attractions. You'll travel past Liberty Square -- a vast public open space -- and see the mile-long White Mill Beach.
Watch for the vertical-lift Bridge of La Recouvrance spanning the Penfeld River, which bisects the city.
The Tour Tanguy is a medieval tower on a rocky rise adjacent to the riverbank. It sports an unusual almost-Chinese-style roof and hosts a market twice a week.
Nearby Brest Castle perches at the mouth of the river and dates back, in its current form, more than 500 years. The Oceanopolis marine center is housed within its walls.
Notes: Minimal walking required; sightseeing is from the motorcoach.
