Explore the well-preserved 19th-century buildings of the Kjerringøy Trading Post, set in beautiful countryside surroundings.
A panoramic drive along the coastal road brings you to Festvåg. Board a ferry for a picturesque ride across the sea to Misten. From here, it's just a short hop to Kjerringøy.
Kjerringøy Trading Post is a fine open-air museum of heritage building set among magnificent coastal scenery. It consists of 15 buildings from the 19th century, retaining many of their original contents. This was once the domain of the Zahl family -- merchant suppliers of everything from manufactured goods and clothes to the fishermen of Lofoten.
Upon arrival, watch an audio-visual illustrating 19th-century life on Kjerringøy. Take a guided walk through the Trading Post Museum and the Zahl family house. Step back in time as you admire the house with its Italianate busts, embroidered curtains and well-stocked medicine cabinet, which still contains many unusual Victorian remedies.
After your walk, there will be time to visit the museum or to shop and explore. Wander to the country store, in its picture-postcard location on the white-sand beach, and purchase some nostalgic boiled sweets if you wish (at your own expense).
On the way back to the port, relax and sightsee as you pass through Bodø .
Notes:
There is some uneven terrain outside and a few steps inside the buildings. Bring local currency, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress in layers.
