Visit the strongest tidal current in the world - Saltstraumen - in a fast RIB (rigid inflatable) boat.
Half of your adventure is by bus, and half by boat. One group heads for Saltstraumen by bus, enjoying a guided tour through Bodø and surroundings. The other group takes the large high-speed RIB boat on a tour through a breathtaking maritime landscape. Near the Saltstraumen Visitor Center the two groups will meet and change places for the return trip to Bodø.
Before boarding the boat, put on a thermal flotation suit and life jacket, as well as headgear, gloves and goggles. Listen to a safety brief and you're off to explore.
Four times a day, 13 billion cubic feet of water are forced in and out through a passage 150 yards wide, two miles long and 82 feet deep, due to the enormous difference between high and low tide in this part of Norway. When the current is at its strongest the speed reaches about 15 knots. This is a spectacular sight and a great photo opportunity. On your journey through the wild landscape there is a good chance you may spot sea eagles and you'll see parts of the Caledonian Fold Belt -- a range of mountains more than 250 million years old.
Notes:
Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. Not suitable for guests with back or neck conditions. Thermal flotation suit and life jacket provided and must be worn.
