Experience the awe-inspiring majesty of Romsdalen on the route hailed by Lonely Planet as the most scenic rail journey in Europe. Running down the Romsdalen Valley, the line opened between 1921 and 1924 as a branch of the Dovre Line, which connects the cities of Oslo and Trondheim. You'll be captivated by its breathtaking landscapes, promising an adventure filled with beauty and wonder.
Why is the Rauma Railway called the Golden Train? In April 1940, during the invasion of Norway, the country's gold reserves were hastily evacuated from Oslo. In a remarkable display of courage and resilience, a group of ordinary Norwegians united to undertake a perilous train journey through the stunning Romsdalen terrain. Pursued by enemy forces, they steadfastly protected 3,000 bars of gold, ensuring its safe passage and safeguarding their nation's wealth in the face of adversity.
Now, it's your turn to follow in the footsteps of genuine heroes and experience this train line that is integral to Norway's history.
Notes:
Terrain includes three steep steps to (dis)embark the train. Collapsible wheelchairs can be stored on board. The train journey is a scheduled service on a one-track railway line; delays may occur if the train has to wait for an on-coming train to pass. Basic restroom facilities are available on the train and on the platform. Bring a snack; refreshments are not available for purchase during the tour. The journey includes several tunnels.
