The Sami, the indigenous people in northern Norway, have a vibrant and colorful culture, both past and present. This is your opportunity to learn more about their old ways and modern life.
Travel by coach to the tiny Sami village of Maze, around an hour’s journey south of Alta. Along the way, your guide shares stories about many aspects of the history and life in Alta and Norway.
Members of a Sami reindeer-herding family greet you.
Take a 20-minute riverboat ride along a sparkling river nearby. This offers a fantastic waterside perspective of the scenery of Finnmark.
Back ashore, visit the old church of Maze for a crash course in the Sami alphabet. Not easy, but totally fascinating!
Your hosts invite you to step inside their large gathering tent (called a lavvo). Take a seat around a central fire on warm reindeer pelts that cover the ground and sample Sami specialties -- spiced maize cake, dried reindeer meat, and fire-brewed coffee. Ask your Sami hosts about their life experiences, their culture, and their traditional clothing. They will demonstrate joik for you -- the ancient Sami form of singing.
Bid your hosts farewell and return to Alta.
Notes:Tour requires walking about 75 yards between the bus and the tent. Participants will sit on reindeer hides on the ground; a few chairs can be made available if needed
