Tirpitz was a German battleship that spent much of World War II in Nazi-occupied Norway. Known as the Lonely Queen of the North, she was the sister ship of the Bismarck and the largest battleship ever built in Europe. Tirpitz posed a major threat to Allied convoys traveling through the Atlantic and Barents Seas. In September 1943, she sustained damage from British mini-submarines close to Alta. She was then relocated to Tromsø, attacked by RAF Bomber Command, and sunk in the bay of Håkøybotn.
You will visit the Tirpitz Museum in Kåfjord, which exhibits a host of World War II artifacts, including many associated with Tirpitz. Watch a short film before enjoying a museum tour and a talk on the region's turbulent wartime history. It is quite fascinating.
Before returning to the pier, pause at Kåfjord Church. This 19th-century building has some Gothic touches and an interesting past. It was built in 1837 for copper mine workers and is the area's oldest remaining building after the devastation of World War II.
