This brilliant flightseeing tour takes you over the dramatic landscape where Game of Thrones and Oblivion were filmed. Take off from Akureyri and head out with your pilot for a bird's-eye view of numerous scenic attractions and natural geothermal phenomena.
(S)he will fly you over the Lake Myvatn area and magical lava rocks. Watch for the Vatnajökull Glacier National Park and see Dettifoss -- the most powerful waterfall in Europe. Watch the water rushing through the magnificent Jokulsargljufur canyons, including stunning Asbyrgi Canyon. Legend holds that Asbyrgi was formed by the eight-legged horse owned by the Norse god Oðin took a giant step that created a horseshoe-shaped canyon surrounded by high cliffs. Scientists say that enormous, catastrophic glacial bursts carved out Asbyrgi's deep ravines and rocky basins. What do you think? No matter how it came about, this area is famed for its beauty and is known as the Diamond of the North.
In the territory where Paganism met Christianity, you'll fly over Goðafoss waterfall. Keep in mind that this is the waterfall into which statues of the pagan gods were thrown when Iceland converted to Christianity a thousand years ago.
You'll land back at Akureyri's airstrip and visit the Flight Museum, just a few minutes away. The museum offers a brief overview of Iceland's aviation history. It's the perfect way to end the day before you return to the ship.
