Iceland is one of the best locations in the world to enjoy whale watching. The abundance of marine life in the waters around Akureyri provides ideal feeding grounds, attracting more than twenty species of whales, dolphins and porpoises.
The whale-watching boat is only a short walk from the pier in Akureyri. The friendly crew welcomes you on board before you set off on the pristine waters of Eyjafjord. Tall, snow-capped mountains line the seemingly endless fjord. Your exciting search for the ocean's gentle giants is both thrilling and beautiful.
The tour enjoys a 95% success rate for spotting whales. Many species have been sighted here, including blue, fin, humpback, minke and sei whales. The best time for whale watching in Iceland is from late spring to early fall (May - September).
Guests wishing to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so but must make their own way back to the ship.
Notes:
The boat may not be exclusive to Holland America Line guests. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat and a scarf. Wear sturdy, non-skid walking shoes. Bring sunglasses and binoculars. Tour requires a 15- to 20-minute walk from the pier to where the boat is docked (from the ship) on paved and even ground. There are steps on board the boat to reach the viewing platforms and to access the cabin area downstairs.
