Feel the centuries peel away during this all-day excursion designed to stir your imagination with the romance of Old Spain and the history of the Conquistadors' interaction with the Native peoples. The history of the Mayo Natives prior to the Spanish conquest has been lost in time; their known history begins only in 1532, with the arrival of explorer Diego Hurtado de Mendoza.
Embark on a scenic drive to Capomos. This tiny village is home to the remaining Mayo Natives -- their time-honored traditions handed down from generation to generation. See the ruins of a 16th-century adobe mission alongside a newer Catholic church built in 1937. Watch a lively and colorful folkloric dance and admire an exhibition of handcrafted items.
A short drive away is El Fuerte, founded by Spanish conquistador Francisco de Ibarra. It is renowned as the birthplace of Zorro -- the legendary, swashbuckling outlaw hero. Learn more about Zorro over lunch at the Posada del Hildalgo Hotel, believed to have been the original home of Don Diego de la Vega -- Zorro's civilian identity. This majestic colonial mansion was the largest and most beautiful manor in El Fuerte when it was built in 1890.
Enjoy the elaborate costumes and spirited dances of a folkloric group as they recount the legend of El Fuerte's native son. Zorro himself may even make an appearance…
Take a leisurely walk through the town's narrow, orderly streets. Your knowledgeable guide leads you past architectural masterpieces and shares significant historic events. A highlight is the lovely 18th-century Baroque-style cathedral on Plaza de Armas .
