The Copper Canyon train is a notch in the belt of serious travelers, and the canyon itself is renowned for its epic landscapes and scenery. However, this is not a typical train ride in any sense, so it is essential that you bring your spirit of adventure.
A 90-minute transfer by motorcoach brings you to El Fuerte, where you will board the Chihuahua Pacifico train.
Enjoy a leisurely morning and a full American breakfast on board the train as you traverse the magnificent Sierra Madre mountain range, eventually entering the Copper Canyon.
The approximately six-hour rail journey (each way) winds through tunnels and over bridges, climbing to 7,200 feet above sea level.
On arrival at Copper Canyon, a short bus transfer brings you to the Mirador Hotel. Admire the vastness of the canyon from the terrace of the hotel.
Lunch is served overlooking the canyon rim. Watch a Tarahumara dance presentation and head out on a walking tour designed to help you understand the geology of the canyon.
Finally, transfer to the station and relax on the train journey back to El Fuerte.
Notes:
Due to this tour's popularity, exclusivity, and strict booking conditions, tour bookings must be confirmed three days prior to the call at Topolobampo. Any cancellations thereafter are non-refundable, and a 100% penalty will be applied to the reservation. This tour is long and strenuous, suitable only for participants who are prepared to spend a lengthy day on the train, which does not match the standards of rail travel elsewhere. It is essential that you bring your patience, understanding and forbearance, as there can be several challenges and deviations from expected plans. The train cars are not wheelchair accessible. Bring a coat due to the elevation and possible weather systems moving through. In December and January, in addition to your coat, bring a hat and gloves, as there could be snow at the higher elevations. Occasional fog can limit the view from the top of the canyon; no guarantees are made in this regard. Wear comfortable walking shoes. The terrain is uneven at the stops. Guests with a heart condition or respiratory difficulties should note that the tour gains more than 7,000 feet in elevation within a short timeframe. For your enjoyment, there is a car on the train selling beverages and snacks (at your own expense; US dollars; cash only).
