Explore Vallarta's most historic residential area -- the one that Elizabeth Taylor fondly referred to as Gringo Gulch at a time when the term was not considered edgy. For better or for worse, the name has stuck well into the 21st century.
Travel by air-conditioned coach to the center of Puerto Vallarta as your guide tells you the area's history.
Step off the coach in the central square downtown to begin an interesting walk through history. Your trek begins at a slow pace as you make your way up the winding cobblestone streets among enormous colonial-style homes with breathtaking views of the city below.
Watch for the former home of Elizabeth Taylor, complete with a bridge to the pool house to which Richard Burton was banished after their first divorce.
Walk down a wide staircase, and you're suddenly in the tropical paradise of Cuale Island, where you can purchase refreshments (at your own expense).
Take advantage of a quick stop for some shopping before heading directly back to the ship.
Notes:
Tour requires approximately 90 minutes of walking with an uphill section at the beginning. Water is provided at rest stops. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
