Three hundred years old and still relatively undiscovered, Loreto is one of the oldest cities in Mexico.
Walk along Main Street -- the very first paved road in the Californias. Watch for houses dating from the late 19th century, the Town Hall building, and the downtown plaza.
You will visit the Our Lady of Loreto Mission Church, founded in 1697 by an Italian Jesuit priest. This is the oldest Jesuit Mission on the West Coast and is home to wonderful paintings and a magnificent altar from the 17th century.
Step back in time and into the museum to appreciate the juxtaposition of two different worlds -- Native traditions, costumes and artifacts, and original art pieces brought by the missionaries from Europe, Asia and Mexico's mainland.
Notes:
Wear comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes for walking on cobblestone streets. Guests carrying a video camera may be charged a fee at the church or the museum. Minimum age is 4 years.
