Depart from Pichilingue and, as you travel to La Paz, you will see the surrounding desert as an intriguing, extremely beautiful ecosystem full of endless surprises. Over centuries, its flora and fauna have evolved endemic characteristics due to its relative isolation. Strange-looking valleys contain cardon and pitaya cacti, elephant trees and thorny chollas forming a spiny green carpet on the sandy earth. Hawks, wrens, woodpeckers, roadrunners and Xantus hummingbirds live here, as well as desert bighorn, foxes, coyotes, pumas, desert mice and squirrels.
In La Paz (the City of Peace), follow the beautiful boardwalk to admire the unique sculptures that have come to symbolize the history and cultural treasures of the region. You will also visit the Museum of Anthropology & History to see exhibits from the history of Sea of Cortez pearls and Baja California.
Explore with your guide the lovely Cathedral Nuestra Señora de La Paz, built in 1861 atop the ruins of a 140-year-old Jesuit Mission. The cathedral's interior boasts beautiful stained-glass windows.
At a family-owned pottery factory, browse for handmade decorative items, glazed tiles, and tableware.
Notes:
Minimum age is 7 years. There are two flights of stairs at the museum; no elevator is available. Terrain can be uneven. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Bring local currency, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. Mexico's air-conditioning is not the same as in the USA and Canada -- it may seem warmer. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed.
