Pass by the Doges' Palace -- a symbol of the republic and a stunning example of fine Venetian-Gothic architecture, see the Bridge of Sighs and continue to St Mark's Basilica and admire from outside what the foremost church of the city has always been. This is where the Dukes were ordained and for hundreds of years it was the center of religious and social life in Venice. The beautiful juxtaposition of Byzantine architecture, marble and mosaics have led to St Mark's being known as 'the Golden Church'.
