Cross the border into Slovenia to visit the Lipica Stud Farm. The route passes through limestone hills dotted with vineyards, orchards and olive groves. This panoramic drive is across a Karst area. Karst does not reveal its secrets at first glance, for its essence remains hidden deep beneath the earth in an underground cellar of more than a thousand subterranean caves. Above ground, blanketed by tall pines, the landscape unfurls itself in slightly unruly splendor.
The farm has bred prized Lipizzaner horses for more than 400 years. After World War II, the Lipica Stud Farm formed its own riding academy. The Lipizzaner breed originally derives from the cross-breeding of Andalusian, Neapolitan and native Slovenian horses. They're most commonly associated with Vienna's Spanish Riding Academy, founded in 1572 to provide training for the Hapsburg nobility and its cavalry.
Visit the stables and attend a performance of the Classical School of Riding. A presentation also introduces you to the stud farm's breeding achievements.
After your visit, drive back to Trieste and the pier.
