Your journey begins as your driver guide collects you from the quayside for your 4x4 adventure. You'll take a brief motorway drive before making your way up the slopes of mighty Mt Etna. En route. You'll stop to see the vast lava flows and the more recent paths eroded by the 2002 eruptions. The lava has carved its way through hillside forests and bushland, leaving a scar that can be seen from miles around.
In 1980, Etna's flank suffered a colossal sector collapse, which caused part of the volcanic cone to slide towards the east. This movement sent an avalanche of rock crashing towards the sea devastating everything in its path. The huge depression which remains is known as Valle de Bove (Valley of the Ox). Visit the Dagala Longa by 4x4 as you travel over the lava fields.
The eruptions of 1992 and 1993 created a fascinating cave from the lava flows.
You'll visit Corruccio Cave which showcases how a particularly fluid lava flow shapes the landscape.
You'll have a truly up-close view of the magnificent Mt Etna as you follow your guide on a walk over the new lava flows. You'll see the steam created from the activity of Piano Provenzana and the wonderful views from atop one of Europe's most active volcanoes.
After your exciting morning you'll have worked up and appetite. Enjoy a typical Sicilian lunch at a local lodge.
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring a jacket as it can be cool on the upper slopes of Mt Etna.
