See some of the legendary beauty of Sicily as you visit Mt Etna, driving south on the highway through vineyards, citrus groves, and villages. You will learn that Etna is a very active volcano -- it has erupted more than 130 times -- and is the tallest in Europe at 10,723 feet high.
On the flanks of the volcano, enjoy a panoramic view of the city of Catania, which was overwhelmed by an eruption 300 years ago. Then, walk around Crateri Silvestri, created by the lava flow of the 1983 eruption. These small craters are set amid bare fields of gray lava that stretch for miles.
Continue down the mountain through lemon groves and chestnut and pine forests, which blend with the hardened lava and endless volcanic cones. You will have one hour of free time for shopping before you return to the ship.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Due to the high elevation, bring a light jacket or sweater. Travel time to Mt Etna is one hour each way. Mt Etna is an active volcano and erupts frequently; participate at your own risk. Weather and atmospheric conditions vary; no guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day.
