Visit one of Sicily’s most enchanting villages. Castelmola was founded by the Sicels in the 8th century BC and is strategically located near Taormina. It boasts splendid panoramic views.
The focal point of the tiny village is the attractive Piazzetta del Duomo with its fine, intricate paving.
Proceed to Taormina for some free time to browse on the main street of the village. The beauty of Taormina has been documented by writers for centuries, and the town is one of Sicily’s most impressive resorts. Incredible views, ancient ruins, and an abundance of quaint shops and boutiques make this cliff-side town utterly irresistible. Many of its narrow cobblestone streets are closed to traffic, making the main part of Taormina accessible only on foot.
Spend some time taking in the stunning view of the Bay of Naxos, and don’t miss the Greco-Roman theatre (at your own expense), which ranks among the most impressive landmarks in all of Italy.
Notes:
Expect crowding in Taormina. Tour requires strenuous uphill walking. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, and many steps. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Elevators are available to reach Taormina’s gates but, in the event of long lines, you may be required to climb approximately 140 steps. Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. The entrance fee at the Greco-Roman theatre is not included. There is very limited time at the Greco-Roman theatre; those who choose to purchase tickets may not have enough time to also complete the tour. An uphill walk with approximately 80 steps is required to reach the village of Castelmola. Weather and atmospheric conditions vary; no guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day.
