Departing from Toulon, you will head to Le Castellet -- a typical Provençal hilltop village. Perched on a wooded hill above the vineyards, this remarkable stronghold, formerly owned by the Lords of les Baux, has well-preserved ramparts, a carefully restored 12th century church and a castle dating back to the 11th century.
Entering by way of two fortified gates, le portail and le portalet, you will begin a walking tour along the narrow streets and up to the castle which now functions as the Town Hall. See the St Sauveur Church with its lovely windows before taking in the view inland towards Ste Baume and Paul Ricard Circuit. Free time allows you to explore the arts and craft workshops, scouting for paintings, pottery and hollow-ware.
Visit Sanary sur Mer -- a lovely 16th century port in the heart of Provence. This city of light and contrasts will welcome you with its colorful façades and shaded walkways, vineyards and hundred-year-old olive trees. Its quirks include the 'Roman' tower, dating only from the 13th and 14th centuries, was used for the defense of the region, and the church bell of Notre Dame de Pitié (16th century) which was rung by the resident hermit to warn of enemy ships on the horizon.
