Whether you are a wine connoisseur or simply curious about viticulture in Crete, this option introduces you to the island's special terroir and two noteworthy wineries.
Visit Karavitakis Estate, where an 80-year family legacy leads the practice of tending 150 acres of vineyard. Timely harvests of both well-known and rare varietals make for some outstanding wines. This winery features modern equipment and technology, two wine-tasting areas, and a small church nestled between its beautiful vineyards and olive grows of the hilltop Kolimbari area.
Equally charming, Manousakis Wines in the Lefka Ori mountain range of Western Crete is all about the quiet rhythms of nature. These foothills are enveloped by the intoxicating aromas of rosemary, thyme, marjoram, sage, lavender and chamomile. Each spring, thousands of wildflowers come to life, cladding the hills in a robe of stunning technicolor; in the fall, they surrender to the earth to be reabsorbed by the soil, and so continues the cycle. The philosophy of Manousakis Winery is simple -- carefully and organically cultivated vines are allowed to be part of this essential, totally natural terroir, capturing and preserving the incredible Lefka Ori of Crete in each bottle.
