This half-day excursion combines a walking tour of the ancient town of Pezenas with a visit to the Abbey of Valmagne. A former fortified Roman city and the seat of the government of Languedoc, today Pezenas is a city of artists.
Follow your guide on a walk through the Old Town for a glimpse of the narrow streets, 17th-century mansions with elegant balconies, and ornate doorways. Visit the Roman Catholic church with your guide.
You will have some free time to explore a fine array of artisans' shops.
Re-board the coach for the short drive to the Abbey of Valmagne. Originally founded under the Benedictine Order in 1138 by Raymond Trencavel, the abbey became one of the richest Cistercian abbeys in the south of France during the 12th and 13th centuries, housing up to 300 monks. Visit all the elements of a typical abbey -- the cloister with its charming Tuscan garden, the Chapter House, and the Gothic church that has become a cellar for Valmagne wine.
Sample some of the wines produced locally before heading back to Sète and the ship.
Notes:
Tour requires considerable walking; wear comfortable walking shoes. Minimum age to participate in wine tasting is 18 years. Restoration work is being carried out at the Valmange Abbey.
